Why Do We Overeat? Because We are Starving

It may come as a shock, but this generation is starving. And that's why a big percentage of Americans are overweight.

We are starving, for nutrients.

Nutrient Deficiencies due to consumption of processed foods devoid of vitamins minerals and micronutrients can cause the body to think its starving, even if we're eating a lot. 

In a groundbreaking study, researchers, among them Dr Joel Fuhrman, dove into the mysteries of overeating and hunger, shedding light on a new perspective that could change the way we view dieting.

The study aimed to unravel the enigma behind overeating.

Spanning across 768 participants predominantly dwelling in the US, the study compared individuals who had recently switched from a low micronutrient diet to a high one. They had to compare how they felt when they were eating a low nutrient diet, compared to how they felt on a high nutrient diet. Survey responses detailing hunger cues - both the physical and emotional aspects- were collected from participants before and after the dietary shift. 

Through rigorous statistical analysis, stark differences emerged between the two diets concerning hunger symptoms and locations. Strikingly, hunger pangs were mild on the high nutrient diet, appearing less frequently even if meals were missed. Over 80% of participants disclosed less hunger symptoms overall, with more than 50% reporting a significant reduction in hunger and food cravings.

The study concluded that a diet rich in micronutrients can alleviate the unpleasant pangs of hunger despite participants consuming less calories.

Counting Calories or counting carbs is not as many people think, the best way to lose weight, especially if youre looking for long term results.

Shedding light on the misconception that caloric intake solely dictates hunger levels, the research emphasizes the critical role of nutrient density in shaping our hunger experience.

During the initial phases of changing to a high nutrient diet, when removing processed foods from the diet, you might experience some hunger or headaches. These are usually temporary detox effects, as the body attempts to remove toxins out of the symptom.  This is temporary, and many people don't experience this. This is actually withdrawal. These withdrawal symptoms may turn some people off from continuing on the high nutrient diet, but with a little patience and fortitude, the end results are worth the initial discomfort. 

 As individuals adjust to a high nutrient diet, the initial phase gives way to a sustainable diet full of nutritious foods that provide the body with energy, vitality and health. 

As the body returns to a healthy state, hunger dissipates and it becomes almost impossible to overeat, since healthy wholegrain foods and fruits and vegetables have so much fiber and nutrients that they keep you full and satiated.  

This transition paves the way for weight loss and enhanced well-being in the long run.

Our weight says a lot about our state of health. A healthy body should be able to maintain healthy weight. When we gain weight and can't take it off, it's an indication that something is wrong with our diet, lifestyle and overall health.

Consuming processed refined foods like white flours, sugars, starches, corn syrup causes blood sugar spikes. Elevated insulin levels in the body causes fat storage. As explained above these foods cause us to overeat because they are so devoid of nutrients and fiber.  

Additionally, consuming trans fats, refined and heated vegetable oils causes weight gain and clogs up the arteries. Consuming animal proteins like meat, chicken and fish leads to weight gain. These foods are incredibly hard to digest, unless we are one of the rare individuals with a healthy amount of digestive enzymes. Most people over 40 just don't have enough enzymes to break down animal proteins.

A few conditions linked to weight gain include: Toxic overload (from bad diet and medications), high insulin levels (even without diabetes), low functioning thyroid, and a dysfunctional digestive system. These conditions all contribute to weight gain and obesity.

Bad diet is perhaps the biggest contributing factor behind the obesity epidemic we are facing, because bad diet can cause all of the above conditions, and it contributes to hunger symptoms that cause us to overeat. As we explained above, processed foods, which is about 70% of what's on supermarket shelves is highly processed and consuming these foods will sabotage your weight loss efforts.
