The Silent Siege on U.S. Farmlands: A Threat to Food Security and Rural Livelihoods

Corporations are buying up farmland with the aim of planting genetically modified seeds like CRISPR-edited crops. German conglomerate Bayer, which acquired Monsanto in 2018, has partnered with genetic food startup Pairwise to develop and distribute new CRISPR gene-edited vegetables and grains to the American market. Meaning Bayer will have to either buy land or hire farmers willing to plant these new GMO seeds.  It's a monster licensing deal which will have far reaching consequences. 

After all Bayer, after it bought out Monsanto, is now the largest seed company in the World.

Pairwise is also developing gene-edited corn, soy, wheat, canola, coffee, and bananas under Bayer's aegis, setting the stage for a genetically manipulated future of our food supply. Bayer, with its 340 companies in 80 countries, exemplifies the far-reaching influence of foreign multinational conglomerates on agriculture worldwide.

Bill Gates and China are also heavyweights in the genetically modified seed game, underscoring the global competition for control over the very essence of our food.

We cannot overstate the dangers of genetically modified seeds, along with lab-grown meat. These products may harbor unknown toxins or allergens, and the lack of thorough, long-term human testing only exacerbates these risks. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), woefully absent in enforcing rigorous oversight, allows these developments to proceed unchecked.

Another big concern with genetically modified seeds is that farmers become dependent on the big corporations for their seeds every season/year. They are not legally allowed to replant their own seeds. Because every genetically modified seed is patented.

This is how farmers in India and Africa are losing their livelihoods and even their lives. 

THE FARMING DISASTER BROUGHT UPON INDIA BY GMO SEED COMPANIES

At least 112,000 farmers have committed suicide in the past decade in India, according to data by the National Crime Record Bureau. In 2021, 10,881 farmers died by suicide and in 2022, 11,290 farmers and farm laborers were reported to have taken their own lives 

But an analysis conducted by Punjab Agricultural University suggested the real number of farmer suicides in Punjab is almost five times of the NCRB data . This mismatch is a result of the politicization of data, a normalized abuse of power to nurture a favorable narrative.

Why are farmers commiting suicide at such an alarming rate? Just decades ago, Indian farmers had their own heirloom seeds, often passed down generation to generation. They didn't have to buy new seeds every year or expensive pesticides.

Until Big corporations entered India with their false promises of crops with higher yields and less bugs. A "miracle". Until the farmers got hooked and realized their promises of higher yields came at a great cost. incredibly high cost for the fertilizers and pesticides and that they would have to plant many more seeds to get that yield. Seeds are expensive.

Once you buy GMO seeds and plant them you must buy new seeds every year, legally you cannot replant seeds. Patented GMO seeds are protected by intellectual property rules, meaning farmers must pledge not to save them and replant. Plus hybrid seeds cannot be replanted, they don't breed true. 

In many cases, farmers cannot work their land due to illness linked to pesticides and fertilizers. They are dealing with deep battles against multinational corporations. And all the while  trying to get loans from banks to fund these expenses to make the agricultural cycle possible.

And then, when farmers are unable to get loans from legitimate banks, illegal moneylenders – or loan sharks – step in, creating a debt trap for farmers,  in some instances pushing them to suicide.

 Is this what we  want the future American Farmers to look like? Increasing dependence and slavery to multinational corporations who are governed by greed and profits at any cost including the health of the farmers and the nation?

This isn't just a threat to farmland — it's an assault on our entire food supply. As monster corporations and billionaires consolidate their grip on the agricultural sector, the very future of American nutrition hangs in the balance. We are sleepwalking into a future where our food is controlled by a select few with little to no accountability.

The time for polite conversation is over. We must wake up to the grim reality facing our farmlands and food supply. Rigorous governmental oversight and a public outcry loud enough to dismantle this monopolistic control are now imperative. If we don't act now, we are condemning ourselves and future generations to a dystopian food landscape dictated by a powerful few. The stakes could not be higher.
