Green Tea: An Ancient Superfood that You shouldn't Live Without

Green Tea is one of the most powerful nutrients in existence. It's not for nothing that green tea has been a staple China for thousands of years.

Green tea contains many polyphenols (antioxidants), the most abundant and exceptional of which is epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), which has shown a broad spectrum of anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, vasoprotective (blood vessel protecting), and antifibrotic actions.

Many years ago, my work took me to China. In total I visited over 20 times, and every trip I was amazed by how the taxi drivers survived their harsh work conditions.  They sat in their cars for 16 hours at a time surrounded by thick air pollution and heavy smog, with the windows rolled down and no air conditioning. Sitting in the back, I could barely breathe at all in the summer months.  And as if that wasn't enough strain on their lungs, many of them were also heavy smokers.  Yet they always had a large glass thermos filled with green tea beside them, with the tea leaves resting at the bottom. They would sip it all day, savoring the flavor and believing it offered protection against the environmental hazards they encountered every day.

I believe the green tea protected them from lung cancer and other diseases.

GREEN TEA THE SUPERFOOD POWERHOUSE FOR DETOXIFICATION & WEIGHT LOSS

Green Tea is one of the most potent detoxifying foods on Earth. For this reason it is also one of the best weight loss foods.

How does green tea accomplish both at the same time?

It's important to understand that Fat Cells store toxins. In fact, the body creates fat cells on purpose to move toxins away from vital organs. For this reason, it holds on to fat cells, and it becomes seemingly "impossible" for people to lose weight despite diet attempts.

Green Tea helps us lose weight safely by helping the body release fat, then it supports the liver in removing these toxins, and finally it assists fat soluble toxins exit the body through the stool.

Green Tea addresses the root cause of obesity: a buildup of toxins in the body.

There is no other detoxifying food quite like Green Tea.

GREEN TEA AND CANCER PREVENTION

Cancer also indicates a buildup of Acidity and toxins in the body. Cancer is literally a survival mechanism. Like fat cells, the body creates cancer tumors to deal with low oxygen levels and toxicity in the body. Its a short term attempt by the body to survive. Green Tea cuts cancer risk by increasing cancer fighting enzymes, removing free radicals, and inhibiting cancer cell growth.

Drinking Green Tea on a daily basis cuts stomach cancer risk by 48%cuts ovarian cancer risk by 61% (76% if you drink it for 30 years), and it greatly reduces the risk of prostate tumor development in men.

The Jaw-Dropping Health Benefits of EGCG in Green Tea

Decreases Breast Cancer Risk:
EGCG, EGC, and ECG have been shown to reduce the proliferation of human breast cancer cells in vitro and decrease breast tumor growth in rodents. A study in Japan indicated that women who drank more green tea had a lower risk of developing breast cancer.

Decreases Prostate Cancer Risk:

EGCG has been shown to inhibit the growth of prostate cancer cells by inducing apoptosis. It was found to be the most potent catechin at inhibiting cell growth in prostate cancer cell lines.

Potential for Detoxifying Cancer Causing Agents:
Studies indicate that EGCG can help detoxify certain carcinogens, such as 2-hydroxyamino-3-methylimidazo[4,5-f]quinoline, a compound found in cooked meat, by neutralizing these harmful substances.

In a study of 42 people, the concentrate -- composed of chemicals known as green tea catechins in amounts equal to that found in 8-16 cups of green tea -- boosted production of these cancer fighting detoxifying enzymes, (GST enzymes), by as much as 80 percent in some participants. GST enzymes are believed to be crucial to the body's defense against cancer-causing chemicals and other toxins

Antioxidant Powerhouse:
EGCG is a potent antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals—unstable molecules that can damage cells and contribute to various diseases.

Scavenging Free Radicals (ROS):
EGCG effectively scavenges reactive oxygen species (ROS), a type of free radical produced during normal cellular processes. When in excess, ROS can cause oxidative stress, leading to cellular damage.

Activation of Detoxification Enzymes:
EGCG can enhance the activity of phase II detoxifying enzymes like glutathione S-transferase (GST) and NADPH quinone reductase (NQO1), which play a vital role in breaking down and eliminating toxins from the body.

Heart Health:

Research from Japan indicates that green tea can reduce LDL cholesterol levels, which lowers the risk of coronary heart disease. One study found that tea drinkers had a 36% lower risk of heart disease.

Protection Against Oxidative Stress:
By reducing oxidative stress, EGCG helps safeguard cells and tissues from damage caused by toxins and other harmful agents.

Benefits for Liver Health:
Research suggests that EGCG offers protective effects on the liver, potentially reducing liver damage and promoting better liver function.

EGCG and Heavy Metal Detoxification:
EGCG has been shown to mitigate the toxicity of heavy metals in various tissues, including the liver, kidneys, and neural cells, offering potential protective benefits.

EGCG and Gut Health:
Studies suggest that EGCG can improve gut health by enhancing the gut microbiota and strengthening the gut barrier.

Neuroprotective Properties:
EGCG has demonstrated neuroprotective effects, especially in models of Parkinson’s disease, where it helps prevent dopamine neuron loss and enhances antioxidant enzyme activity in the brain.

How to Optimize EGCG Levels

With Green Tea the benefits are best felt when consumed daily, long term, and optimally 2-4 cups per day.

A cup of brewed green tea contains about 200–300 mg of EGCG. Maximize the amount of EGCG in your tea by pouring boiling water over the leaves (not bags) and steeping for 10 minutes. Even better, leave the leaves in the cup for longer and sip throughout the day. Personally, I enjoy the taste of the leaves, so feel free to consume the leaves as well.

Avoid green tea at night as it does contain caffeine.
